A declaration of desire by a woman to a very young man, Hippolytus, the son of her husband Theseus. The courage of shamelessness to express the sex, blood, senses and eternity of this desire, but also its overflowing suffering. With as much strength and flamboyance as Euripides's heroine, and more unleashed than Racine's, Ritsos's Phaidra can no longer contain her mad desire that has been held back for too long, and from which, she knows, only death can deliver her. But before she dies, the beautiful untouchable must be splashed with her sensuality and fury.
Yannis Ritsos was born in 1909 in Monemvassia (Peloponnese) and died in Athens in 1990. Since 1936, he has resisted every dictatorship in his country. His abundant body of work was never divorced from the symbols and myths of ancient Greece.
