Platen was able to live out his forbidden loves in his ghasels before going into exile in Italy in 1826, where he died of cholera in 1835. His life inspired Thomas Mann to write Death in Venice (1913), which Visconti turned into the film of the same name (1971). Federico García Lorca, for his part, wrote twelve "gacelas" in "Le divan du Tamarit" (1934-1936).
